Mazes of Karradash 2 is a glorious retro dungeon crawler that is kind of instant death, and kind of not. It features 20 pre-designed mazes which are mostly unique in cool and interesting ways. One maze might have a lot of square rooms, another might have a lot of teleports, another might have a lot of lever and locked gates, and so on.
You need to die. This is a game in which you need to die, or you won’t get a chance to use the money, runes and magic stones you’ve collected to unlock new races and classes and equipment, improve your starting stats or forge magic rings and talismans. Fortunately there’s an option to “kill character” and trust me, you will want to do this many times! You’ll also gain coloured spheres in later levels that unlocked special areas in earlier levels. Many of these areas contain the best stones and runes.
The best thing is that Mazes of Karradash 2 lets you re-enter the game at any already-reached level. It’s also generous enough with exp scaling that you’ll level your newly-starting character up sufficiently with just a few kills. Random monsters are never too hard, so even if you’re level 1 again, by the time you’ve reached Maze 15, if you return there at level 1 your stats and eq will be strong enough to kill random monsters pretty easily and gain plenty of juicy exp and coins. It never gets over-grindy – at least if you avoid wasting coins on disposables and things like upgrades for low-level armour. Focus on permanent enhancements such as village upgrades if you can. I also never needed to hire a mercenary so didn’t upgrade that.
A truly wonderful, highly enjoyable game (and if you’re like me, you’ll cheat and screenshot the maps!)
