Knights of Pen & Paper has been described as “role playing in its purest form”. It’s a retro-style RPG where you get to control both players and dungeon master, and choose what battles to fight. The story is set both in the “real world” and the game-within-a-game of their campaign. The game was inspired by 1990s games, and is intended to feel like playing a traditional pen and paper RPG. It deliberately contains a lot of nostalgic references.
You travel from village to village taking quests – over 100 in all. There’s also a range of features such as mining and gathering. There are 12 different classes to choose from (6 unlockables) and 17 characters (5 unlockables), resulting in huge personalisation options. Money you earn can be used to improve the game-play room. Considerable grinding is needed to get money without IAP, but the devs have been trying to balance things.
