QuestLord

QuestLord is a retro-style RPG, billed as a dungeon crawler, but its wide gameworld, quests and single, overarching story make it much more of a fully-realised, classic RPG. You take on the role of a lone hero out to save the Shattered Realm from certain destruction. It has a large world with over 160 maps, over 100 NPCs to interact with, and 18 different quests. You’re also not just trapped in a dungeon, but can explore wilderness and cities. There are secrets to uncover, and a cool feature where you sacrifice food (just drop it) in front of a shrine statue, and you will then teleport there, and end up there if you die, rather than all the way back in the first village.

For those wanting a different challenge, there’s a perma-death rogue-like mode called Quickgame which generates unique dungeons randomly. Strafe buttons (move left/right, rather than turn-to-face left/right) would be a welcome addition. Early play is slightly reminiscent of Dragon Bane II and Princess Demelza, or even a simpler Undercroft. This really is a great game and definitely one to pick up for Classic RPG fans. It’s also nicely balanced.
